Rejected Stone

Osakue Omoera 1973 (Benin City)

Gather those stones

And polish them all but this I forbid you

Why sir?

Do as I instruct

Docility is your portion

How long will I drum this?

Forgive sir

Take no cognizance of my mouthing

Rejected stone

I’m hamstrung at nourishing you

I don’t know the crime in you

To deserve this grim short-changing

But drawing you nigh I will

And nursing you, I will too

Staking my breath for you

With my meagre mite

For your mien is auspicious

And angst twines me like a passionflower

Does a palm tree

To see your diamond body lay unpolished.
